The Korea Basic Science Institute
The Korea Basic Science Institute (KBSI) provides contemporary analytical facilities in life sciences, nano science and environmental science and provides the use of advanced equipment for joint use. In recognition of KBSI¢¥s efforts, the Korean government named KBSI the best research institute in 2007.

Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute
Established in 1976, ETRI is a non-profit government-funded research with major achievements in telecommunications technology, information systems and graphic design. Among ETRI¢¥s critical contributions in communications are CDMA (code division multiple access), WiBro (wireless broadband internet technology) and DMB (digital multimedia broadcasting) telecommunications. Other technologies developed include TDX-Exchange, High Density Semiconductor Microchips, Mini-Super Computers (TiCOM) and advanced multimedia editing systems. The ETRI Journal is a critical source for research and ETRI has over 20,000 patents pending today. With an average of 921 patents and 1000 SCI papers in the last ten years, ETRI is a major research institute. It is also a major source for spin-off venture companies such as Havit Information Co. and Handysoft.

Korea Aerospace Research Institute
The Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI), established in 1989, has been the center for advanced work on airplanes, drones, gliders, satellites and satellite systems, space launch systems and qualified certification for air and aerospace. The aircraft development project includes the Smart Unmanned Air Vehicle (UAV) program and the Korean helicopter program. KARI is also involved in the development of Korea Multi Purpose Satellite (¡°KOMPSAT&") 3, KOMPSAT 5 equipped with Synthetic Aperture Radar (¡°SAR&") and the Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite ¡°COMS&").

Korean Astronomy and Space Science Institute
The Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) established in 1974, serves as Korea¢¥s primary astronomy research institute. KASI includes advanced observational technologies at the Sobaeksan Optical Astronomy Observatory, the Taeduk Radio Astronomy Observatory and the Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory. The Korea Institute of Energy Research (KIER) is dedicated to improving energy technologies and increasing efficiency. Korea Institute of Geosciences and Mineral Resources
KIGAM is a comprehensive research institute covering diverse fields in geoscience to meet the various social needs. Among the fields covered by KIGAM¢¥s researchers are geological mapping and mineral exploration, mineral utilization, groundwater evaluation &the treatment of contamination. Much research and planning for future water shortages and possible geological disasters is also conducted. Korea Institute of Oriental Medicine
The Korea Institute of Oriental Medicine (KIOM) strives to identify benefits form traditional Asian medical treatments and medicines and apply them in contemporary healthcare. Those efforts include the standardization of traditional Korean medical practice, including diagnosis, treatment acupuncture, meridian systems and medicines, quality control in traditional Korean medicine, research on such medicines and support for policy.

Korea Institute of Toxicology
KIT offers services for toxicology to laboratories and other research institutes. Since acquiring the first GLP (good lab practice) certification given by the Korean Ministry of Health &Welfare in 1988, KIT¢¥s GLP system has been certified by the Korean Ministry of Environment (1998) and the Korean Ministry of Agriculture &Forestry (2002). KIT¢¥s GLP system has also received an excellent evaluation from the Japanese government and the OECD.

Korea Ocean Research & Development Institute
MOERI conducts research and makes policy suggestions concerning ocean development &preservation, and marine safety. MOERI ¢¥s research covers ocean resources exploitation, the development of ocean space and energy utilization techniques, the development of technologies of maritime safety, and the development of marine pollution and disaster countermeasures. MOERI also supports the needs from naval research fields, and ocean scientific research fields. Korean Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology
Established in 1985 with full government funding, KRIBB is the leading center in Korea for advanced research in BT, development of BT platforms, establishment of BT infrastructure and commercialization of BT. KRIBB has a budget of USD 108 Million (2008) or 7.9% of Korea¢¥s BT R&D expenditures. Researchers have published articles in Nature, Cell, and Science over the last two years &KRIBB came in 3rd place in the amount of technical transfer among GRI. KRIBB is a center of integrating the capacity of bio-innovation from multi-sectors in Korea.

Korean Research Institute of Chemical Technology
Established in 1976 for research and development of chemical technologies in Korea KRICT is a leading research institute for applied chemistry in the development of globally competitive new drug candidates, advanced chemical materials for the electronic industry and green/sustainable chemical technologies such as biofusion. In bio-organic science, KRICT works on drugs for-cancer, metabolic disease, infectious disease, cerebral disease and inflammatory disease. In advanced materials, KRICT develops display, semiconductor, structural application and energy efficient materials. In sustainable technologies, KRICT develops environmentally friendly chemical technology, technology for the efficient use of energy (including solar and biomass) and biochemical technology (including biocatalysts).

Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science
Established in 1975 Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS) serves as the central authority of the national standards system and has been a global player in advanced measurement technologies for the scientific and industrial community. KRISS maintains world-class standards of measurement and testing in 1709 fields while providing measurement standards services for automobile, ship building, electronic appliances, semiconductors and other industries.

National Fusion Research Institute
With the launch of the Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research (KSTAR) project in 1995, Korea has become deeply involved in fusion research. NFRC (National Fusion Research Institute) is the center for those efforts. In cooperation with other nations, Korea is participating in the development of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor demonstrate scientifically fusion using deuterium-tritium plasma). NFRC has developed the KSTAR, at present in the process of manufacturing and assembly of its facilities. The KSTAR device went online in June, 2008, and has produced plasma.

National Institute for Mathematical Sciences
The National Institute for Mathematical Science (NIMS) undertakes research in three fields: foundational mathematics, interdisciplinary mathematics and industrial mathematics. The division of foundational mathematics develops pure mathematics and promotes the study of mathematics and publication of mathematical science. The division of interdisciplinary mathematics focuses on mathematics in that it is combined with other disciplines such as physics, life sciences or economics, and promotes cooperation between academic institutions. The division of industrial mathematics concentrates on the industrial application of mathematics in fields like IT and communications and finance, and codes.
